{"id":387,"date":"2012-09-02T14:03:05","date_gmt":"2012-09-02T21:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/windowonyourpast.com\/site\/?page_id=387"},"modified":"2013-07-23T14:20:59","modified_gmt":"2013-07-23T21:20:59","slug":"teacher-workshops","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/windowonyourpast.com\/site\/education\/teacher-workshops\/","title":{"rendered":"Teacher Workshops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Between 1994 and 2004 many of the lessons found under Educational Resources were presented at\u00a0The Bostonian Society Teaching Boston History Workshops: Boston in the Industrial Revolution,\u00a0the\u00a0Lowell Conferences on Women\u2019s History, the\u00a0Melrose, MA Summer Institute,\u00a0 the North England Regional Conferences for the Social Studies, and the Worcester\u00a0Alliance for Education.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', 'avant garde';\">1998-1999\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', 'avant garde';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', 'avant garde';\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">&#8220;Opening Your Classroom Window to 19th Century America&#8221;<\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span>a Massachusetts Department of Education Goals 2000 Professional Grant for Teachers. <a href=\"http:\/\/windowonyourpast.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/1998-DOE-icon.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1665 alignright\" alt=\"1998 DOE icon\" src=\"http:\/\/windowonyourpast.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/1998-DOE-icon.jpeg\" width=\"199\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a>\u00a0The course provided a unique balance of pedagogy, academic content and field trips into community resources. \u00a0It not only lifted &#8220;the sash to open the window to the 19th century&#8221;, but mentally, emotionally and sometimes physically allowed participants &#8220;to climb through into another time&#8221; with our students. \u00a0Complex thinking skills grew using an interdisciplinary focus including the art, literature, history, music, economics, architecture, government, geography and religion of the 19th century&#8211;an era of great change and contrasts that influence how we live today. \u00a0It&#8217;s more that teaching about the Civil War!<\/p>\n<p>One of the greatest challenges for classroom teachers is to actively involve each student in gaining new knowledge and skills in a way that it will become part of their lives. \u00a0This energy and creativity must occur within each teacher&#8217;s busy life in addition to the usual work of the average teacher. \u00a0Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923),19th century French actress, once said,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; color: #800080;\"><strong>Life begets life. \u00a0Energy creates energy. \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'comic sans ms', sans-serif; font-size: 16px; color: #800080;\"><strong>It is by spending oneself that one becomes rich.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In that spirit the &#8220;Opening Your Classroom Window to 19th Century America&#8221; Are you really willing to give up your power to the fairer sex?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 300px;\">Twenty educators from across Worcester County gathered at the Worcester Public Library on February 6 for a rehearsal of the Heritage Trail slide show, a field trip to the new library, and an introduction to the resources of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester Historical Museum and Preservation Worcester. The mission for Professional Development Points was to follow the footsteps of women in their community\u2019s past and develop a lesson for their<br \/>\nstudents in the present.
